Self-Awareness is essential to your mental health
According to statistics, fewer than half of black women who need mental health care receive it. The other half carry this I'm a "Stong Black Woman" mentality that hinders them from receiving the care they need.
On September 16, 2024, from 2pm - 4pm we learned about the importance of your self-awareness which is the key to your mental health. Our guest and expert speaker was Delores Long-Coleman, MSW, LCSW-C. Everything listed below are things we she shared with us.

Self-Care
We learned that mental health can be broken down into 2 categories:
Mental Problem/Concern
Mental illness
If untreated a mental concern can turn into a mental illness.
One of the major takes aways from this session was to practice self-care. Dr. Delores Long-Colman stressed to us that self-care is a vital component of managing depression and anxiety. By incorporating self-care strategies into your daily routine, you can support your mental health, reduce stress and improve overall quality of life.
Remember Self-Care is not Selfish
Here are a few she recommended:
Start a journal - Writing a journal can help you process your thoughts and feelings, track your mood and identify patterns in your mental health.
Try art therapy techniques - Exploring different forms of art can be therapeutic. You might want to try painting, drawing or even coloring as a way to relax and express yourself.
Explore music and dance - Listening to music, playing an instrument or dancing can be uplifting and help you connect with your emotions.
"Setting boundaries and practicing saying No"
Setting boundaries is an essential part of self-care. It's important to recognize your own limits and to say no to things that cause you stress or overwhelm.
